Re: Instructional Technology Task Force: Appointment and Charge

Dear Colleagues:

It is with great pleasure that we formally appoint you to serve on the Instruction Technology Task Force, a joint Senate/Administration body to be chaired by Associate Vice Chancellor Jim Davis until a senate-appointed chair is identified. The task force is charged with answering several fundamental questions about the use of instructional technology in education at UCLA. We ask that you develop your recommendations with a process of broad campus consultation, in coordination with the Information Technology Planning Board (ITPB). We would like to target Winter 2003 to receive final recommendations but would also expect regular progress reports to the Information Technology Planning Board and the Faculty Senate.

UCLA's academic units presently display a variety of approaches to the use of technology in instruction. The range of known applications is quite broad, ranging from the occasional use of digitized instructional materials in conjunction with traditional classroom instruction, to instances in which all aspects of instruction are delivered using instructional technology.

We would specifically like you to focus on the pedagogical, research, fiscal, organizational and business frameworks for supporting the University's interests in the use of instructional technology. In this context, there are five key questions we are seeking responses or recommendations from this task force:

1. What technology-assisted learning opportunities does UCLA now offer and intend to offer in the next 3-5 years?
2. How should UCLA track experiences, and build and disseminate general knowledge of effective practices in the use of technology in instruction?
3. What should UCLA's 3-5 year goals be to enable effective use of technology in instruction?
4. What principles should guide the use of technology in degree and non-degree instruction?
5. What are the key academic, governance, fiscal and business parameters and associated framework for proceeding that would best serve UCLA as it works to meet its 3-5 year instructional technology goals?

Administrative, technical and project management support to develop your recommendations will be provided by Associate Vice Chancellor Jim Davis and the Office of Information Technology in coordination with ITPB planning.

We want to thank you for agreeing to serve on this very important Task Force. You share a personal interest in and commitment to the future of instructional technology within your academic or professional area, as well as a strong commitment to UCLA as an institution.

Sincerely,

Wyatt R. Hume
