Educational Technology Vision and Plan

In June 2005, the Faculty Committee on Educational Technology initiated a discussion with the IT Planning Board on three primary recommendations, two of which now have projects associated with them.

  1. Develop a single virtual 24/7 help desk for support of technology in instruction.

A team of staff in UCLA’s Professional Development Program are interviewing helpdesk managers at UCLA and at other universities that provide campus-wide help desk services with the goal of developing a report on the pro’s and con’s of models for UCLA to consider.

  2. Select a single application to support collaboration and teaching tools for instructional, research and administrative groups. Sakai was seen as a strong candidate for such a solution.

Two Sponsors Groups – one looking at technical requirements, the other at functional requirements - will be finalizing criteria, evaluating a short list of solutions, and presenting the Faculty on Educational Technology with a recommendation by June 2006.

A Common Collaboration and Learning Environment Pilot

The Sakai Pilot continues in 2006 winter and spring quarters with an increased number of courses and projects. A report is due to the Faculty Committee on Educational Technology during winter quarter. The Sakai Pilot Team will also share their findings with the Technical and Functional Sponsors Groups that have been charged with a broad review of possible solutions.
