AITB Appointment Letter

Formation of the Academic Information Technology Board (AITB)

The following is a letter from Executive Vice Chancellor Kennel to the UCLA academic community.

March 13, 1997

DEANS, DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT CHAIRS, ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS, AND MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY

Dear Colleagues:

Nothing has the potential to be as far reaching for the life of the campus as the sweeping developments in the realm of information technology, e.g., computing, information technology, new media, digital technology, Internet, multimedia. It is clear that they will have profound consequences for the University's education, research, and service missions.

I firmly believe that academic values and considerations should be paramount in our planning and decision making in this arena. To this end, I am pleased to announce the creation of a new Academic Information Technology Board (AITB), a joint Senate/Administration body with student representation. It will begin its work immediately, drawing upon the report of the Academic Computing Planning Committee and the IRCC's foundational activities.

The Academic Information Technology Board will be the primary governance and oversight body for academic information technology and services. The Board will provide comprehensive and integrated advice to me and the Chancellor concerning all aspects of academic information technology. The Board will be the responsible campus agency for making recommendations concerning technology-related budget requests. Over the course of the next two years, it will guide us in establishing UCLA's vision for information technology and services and an appropriate long-term organizationally-based governance structure. It will maintain close communication with the Academic Senate leadership, and it will ensure that broad-based discussions take place, involving the faculty, deans, and provosts in meaningful ways.

I am very pleased that Professor Archie Kleingartner has agreed to chair the Board. Professor Kleingartner's prior service as Chair of the Academic Computing Planning Committee, Academic Senate Chair, and Founding Dean of the School of Public Policy uniquely suits him to the task of guiding this new Board at such a formative stage.

The charge to the Board is ambitious complex and very important. In large measure the Board's success will depend on the advice and collaboration of the campus academic community, and I call on each of you to lend your support to this important endeavor.

The Board will be housed on an interim basis in room 2244 Murphy Hall, x61058.

Sincerely,

Charles F. Kennel
Executive Vice Chancellor
